Over Cairn O’ Mount

Glenn and I did our early morning walks round the loch – but this time in very foggy conditions as the haar had not cleared.

You couldn’t see from one end of the loch to the other.

It was quieter this morning – the fog had discouraged a lot of walkers.

However the swans and ducks were not bothered.

Back at the van we got organised to leave the campsite. We then drove to Mums where we had breakfast. We enjoyed some Aberdeen rowies- rolls particular to Aberdeenshire with lots of butter and some salt. You could compare them to a flat dense croissant. They are not a low calorie snack but very delicious.

We then said our farewells until October and then headed off north just as the sun was breaking through the fog.

We went over the high local mountain road the Cairn O’ Mount which usually has spectacular views from the top, but were still a little hazy.

We were soon at my school friend Lorraine and husband Charlie’s place in Dinnet just outside Aboyne in Speyside where many whisky distilleries are – and near Balmoral where the royals visit on holiday. Their motorhoming and golfing friends Ian and Wilma are visiting them at the moment.

We all went out for lunch to Ballater in the cafe in the old train station.

Queen Victoria started coming to Balmoral and would arrive here. Her original train carriage is here in the main cafe area.

We had a good catch up and enjoyed meeting Ian and Wilma – they are also golfers and motorhomers.

After a refreshing drink in the garden back at Lorraine and Charlie’s we continued north.
There were some spectacular views and interesting sculptures.

We went over the Lecht past the ski area to Tomintoul – the highest town in Scotland.

We stopped for the night at a small carpark next to a birdhide just outside town. We checked out the birds and the deer from the hide.

We then had dinner with a nice view and peace and quiet. The sun was down eventually at 10.25pm.
