Rudolph Steiner Centre

We woke up early at the Svetinje camper spot and had an early walk to get some photos.

It was very cool so a great time to enjoy being outside. After breakfast we drove down the hills with this being the first hairpin turn.

We enjoyed being on flat ground and drove onto the town of Donji Kraljevek in Croatia which was the birthplace of Rudolph Steiner.

There is a Rudolph Steiner centre there which was set up in 2007. We were met by Maddy who is 1 of 2 workers at the centre.

She told us a little about Rudolph Steiner’s philosophies on biodynamic agriculture which this centre focuses on, plus creativity and the schools and anthroposophy related to spirituality.

The centre was an old post office redesigned around Steiners architectural ideas – very creative. There were pictures based on his philosophies.

Upstairs was his life story in Croatian which didn’t do us any good I’m afraid. There were paintings by an artist using the wet on wet technique allowing water to move the paint around.

We then took a short walk to his birthplace – only recognized in the 1990s. It’s had rooms knocked off before then so there is only 1 room left.

We then headed back to the centre and said goodbye to Maddy and the director who is off to China to a biodiversity conference. There will be many Australians there who are leaders in biodiversity. It focusses on getting the soil healthy first. I remember seeing a program on how cow horns containing quartz are buried – and thus seems to work. I’m not sure that anyone really understands why. The director showed us a comparison of 3 cucumbers – one from normal agriculture, one organic and one biodynamic. Each was cut up. After 40 days the biodynamic one was still edible while the others were just black and rotten. Very interesting!

We then looked up somewhere to go to keep us cool in the next heatwave. We found a small campsite on a lake on the Hungarian border for only 25 euro per night. It has beach bars too. We had a cool swim in the lake – very weedy but with a sand edge and bottom.

We took some photos as the sun was going down and the geese had gathered where we had been swimming.

It’s quite lovely here with not a lot of people. I think we can manage to relax here for a few days in the 34 degree heat.
