We heard the bad news about our friend Rab on the way to Pula so we didn’t have a good day here.
We arrived at the aire on the Harbour. We had to do something instead of sitting around feeling devastated so we checked out the major locations here.
The first one we came to was huge – the Roman colosseum. Its outer walls are still mostly complete with the top rail still there in many places. It’s still used as a concert venue and Bryan Adams had played here the night before.

There were Roman city gates and Roman ruins everywhere.

There is a complete Roman temple.

I liked how pieces of Roman buildings had been incorporated in other buildings.

Apparently the residents speak both Croatian and Italian – and the town did feel very Italian. It was part of the Venetian Republic for hundreds of years.

The writer James Joyce had been here. He must have been a real gadabout as we have seen several bars linked to him.

It was hard to find but at the top of the hill behind some old Venetian buildings we found the small Roman theatre – still used nowadays.

We then went back to the van via a drink stop.
Glenn at last snapped a hoopoe bird! We saw a lot in Spain but not many here.

The sunset on the Harbour was lovely.

Once it got dark the Harbour cranes that unload ships were illuminated as art pieces.

We had a quiet night thinking about Rab.
