Driving to Mold

Heavy rain on the roof woke me early in the morning in Dolgellau.

After breakfast we went to check out the town. Its main industry was Aran wool – as we can see from the many sheep everywhere. There was a good cafe/deli that was nice to sit in out of the rain with good coffee. There were lots of quirky shops and interesting art galleries.

The green hills can be seen behind the grey buildings.

After our potter around we got on our way. It wasn’t worth going over any high passes as there was mist down on the tops of the hills.

We soon arrived at Bala Lake where Sean did lots of sailing and windsurfing when he was young. It was still very windy and cloudy when we arrived.

We had lunch and it started brightening up. There was some action on the lake – windsurfers enjoyed the conditions but the people in the blow up kayaks had a battle to make any headway in the wind.

These people had a hard time putting up their tent- our entertainment with lunch.

On the road again we drove through the hills with great scenery everywhere.

We went through Ruthin with many Tudor style houses.

The next town was Loggerheads – and we saw that the area lives up to its name as we saw 2 rams head to head butting each other in a field there!

We made a diversion to Queensferry to a Motorhome sales and supply place to get a few bits and pieces – including side mirror protectors as ours have been bashed around a few times.

We then went on to Mold to stay with Sean’s mum Olwyn for 1 night. She was very welcoming as we moved a lot of stuff in for 1 night.

But first Sean took us for the BIG tour of Mold.

The first stop was the big hill in the town. There had been an old fort/motte at the top with 2 enclosed baileys further down here around 1100. They were built by Normans from France claiming the land for themselves. We checked out the hill where it had been. There are now standing stones there commemorating a Gaelic mod in the 1920s.

We then did the main streets seeing the major places Sean visited when he was young. There were many eating places, pubs and wine bars – I’m not saying Sean visited them all, but maybe a few 😊.

After going through the nice park we arrived back at Olwyn’s. I got cooking the dinner of chicken stroganoff while Lisa roasted potatoes. We ate at our usual time of 9pm. We pack a lot into our days do it’s usually very late by the time we get to dinner!

We did have a wine we bought in the Medoc when we stayed overnight at the vineyard. It has matured nicely – it was very smooth – very different from the bottle from Lidl!
