Departures from Kea

We had a late start as we were meeting everyone for a late breakfast at 9am.
We had the last breakfast before saying goodbye so Paulette, Mike, Jeff and Tsachi could go and catch their ferry. We watched their ferry pull out later from a cafe opposite.

We now had a quiet day to do what we liked. We wandered down the town to see the old enamel factory – a large employer in the town from the 1920s that went bust in the 1970s. The buildings are in ruins now.

This must have been a big blow to the town and was obviously a loved company as there is now a small outdoor museum with old machinery and a statuette of the founder.

We then went to check out the bakery up the back of town – it’s a bit of a labyrinth up there.

There is a good selection of spinach pies and baclava – that we chose our lunch from.
We had lunch back in our room and a rest after the last few days being busy.

We went out to our favourite restaurant in town at the other end of town above the wharf.

It was excellent as usual. We had the delicious zucchini balls, fish and salad and went home early for a quiet night.

We were leaving Kea on the next afternoon. We managed to get a late checkout at 1pm so had time to go to the beach around the corner for a swim in the morning. We then had a shower and left to have lunch at a cafe before catching the 4pm ferry back to Lavrio.

We were then picked up by Alexis our Athens Taxi Wagon driver who took us to Sounion south of Athens where we are spending 2 nights. He gave us lots of advice on restaurants and going to see the Temple of Poseidon at sunset.

So we got checked into the very nice hotel Aegeon Beach Hotel and then climbed the hill – a short but rocky climb to the temple. It was built between 444 and 440 BC around the same time as the Parthenon and after defeating Persia in the wars.
It was very busy with many bus loads but we managed to check it all out and take many photos as the sun went down.

We checked out the sun beds and umbrellas with the button for getting bar service. We will definitely be using them tomorrow.

We then went back to the hotel to the in-house Verandah restaurant for dinner. We got an excellent table right on the front of the balcony facing the sea and the temple.

We had only main dishes – I had seafood orzo and Glenn had black pork chop with mandarin sauce. Both dishes were excellent and about Australian prices so very reasonable. We got to bed around 11 and watching a half of the England vs Ghana World Cup match.
