It was very cloudy as we left Bohinj. Glenn captured the mountain tops with his new camera.

We enjoyed the interesting roads through the villages – some extremely narrow between the houses – not designed for motorhomes or trucks.

We drove past Lake Bled – much quieter on a rainy Monday morning than a sunny Saturday afternoon when we last saw it.

We continued south towards the town of Kamnik passing some interesting rural buildings along the way.

We arrived in Kamnik with 2 streams – with lots of water rushing down. This town supposedly has the best water in the country – and makes the best beer.

We parked up in the caravan site beside a stream and after lunch we went off to taste some of the beer.
We found the Maister brewery hidden down the end of an obscure industrial block with only 1 small sign giving it away.
We found 1 chap working there André who was happy to let us taste the beer. We started with lager/pilsner – the Gallus after the Slovenian composer – and also a Latin linked term used for a rooster and also linked to France and the Gauls.

An American couple arrived who were lovely and very into beer. They were from Washington DC so highly educated and clearly worried about the direction America is going in.
The beer was excellent. Andre was enthusiastic to let us try everything. We had Vega pale ale, the General IPA (after General Maister – see later) dark beer, nonalcoholic beer and kombucha.
The last surprising one to us was a ‘sour’ – a mix of barley and fruit. In this case it was mango and passion fruit. We quite liked this as a refreshing alternative to beer.

Andre then took us for a tour of the small operation. It is all very modern and organised – and meticulously clean.

It’s only 10 years old. The owner had started by experimenting and had then got backers to start the brewery. It’s still very small – only about 5 people in all work here including the manager and sales manager. They use only specific German grain.
After all that we thanked André very much and went to check out the town.
We first found the church and bell tower. The bell tower is very old – probably medieval. The windows look old. The church is from the 1700s with amazing paintings.

We then found the birthplace of General Maister a famous military commander from WW1 – and also a poet. He started to drive the carving out of Slovenia from Austria/Hungary to create an independent Slovenia. This eventually happened in 1991 after the split up of Yugoslavia.

We then continued down the main street of historic houses

We found a nice icecream parlour – we needs some food to put on top of all the beer! We took our cones up a big hill to get great views over the town and mountains.

We found a small castle and chapel at the top with many ruins around.

There is a story about a Countess Veronica who supposedly lived in the castle. 3 people asked her for a money to build a church. She said she would rather turn into a serpent than give them a penny. She was then turned into half snake half woman and then swallowed up by the earth. There are several references to Veronika about town.

The bronze sculpture by a Kamnik artist is based on the skeleton of a mammoth, which was found in 1938, during the construction of a bridge, in Nevlje near Kamnik, just a stone’s throw away.

We stayed in after all that watching Wimbledon where Sinner was being soundly beaten – but amazingly his opponent Dimitrov got injured and had to withdraw. Sinner didn’t deserve to get through.
Then in the Tour de France there were multiple crashed with many bad injuries.
We went to bed bemused by all that carnage.
