Wurzburg

The train running near our campsite is carrying all sorts of cargo. There are lots of new cars.

We took the train into Wurzburg – a 15 minute journey along the river and through the vineyards.

We arrived in Wurzburg to find the gay rights march was on so there were people everywhere.

The buildings around were amazing – all looking old – but actually all have been restored after being bombed towards the end of WWII. It seems that the allies didn’t really want to bomb this old city but were forced into it as Germany kept on fighting though they were on their last legs.

We dropped into the St Killians Cathedral. The decoration was amazing. . I was very surprised to find a Jewish menorah directly inside the entrance. Apparently it was placed there to acknowledge Christianity’s roots in Judaism.

We then went to the Wurzburg Residence – where initially bishops and then the Princes of Wurzburg had lived.

It had been totally bombed but had been restored amazingly. The painted ceilings were stunning – as was the decoration on the walls. One of the best was the main Imperial Hall where Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, assisted by his sons, decorated that walls and the ceiling above the staircase with frescoes in the early 1750s.

The green room which had turned darker after the bombing

The mirror room with paintings on the reverse side of the glass was stunning.

There were 40 rooms of decoration and paintings.

These were the photos of Wurzburg after the bombing.

There was also a chapel in the courtyard which was also magnificent.

I liked some paintings in the gallery.

After being absolutely stunned by all that we were looking for an icecream.

But we first checked out the bridge where you are supposed to drink a glass of wine. I’m afraid we were still focussed on icecream.

We then headed for the train station via the icecream shop as we wanted to get back to the campsite for a swim. It was probably 33 degrees by now.

It was an easy train ride back and the pool was besieged by people. After giving them some time to disperse we went for a very pleasant cooling swim. The pool was nearly empty so we managed a few lengths.

We then returned to the campsite for a cooking beer and dinner on the bbq.

We enjoyed that beer!
